LIve Well::After the Cleanse

By beverly  |  Posted in ,   |  May 5th, 2010

We completed the Spring Detox Cleanse last night after our last bowl of alkaline broth. This is a great accomplishment. During the 30 days, I felt incredibly focused and clear about food choices and nutrition. Although it required a lot of effort in the kitchen to prepare shakes, soups, lunches to go, cleaning veggies, and creating delicious marinades, we will do this again, same time next year. The only thing we missed was a champagne toast for a birthday, morning coffee, and our evening wine on the deck.

Lots of lessons learned during Dr. Craig Koniver's Spring Detox Cleanse.  Tomrrow is our last day but there will be many lasting disciplines that we will follow in the future.

Eat Well::Be Well

With all the talk about calories on menus, the overwhelming % of obesity, and a growing consciousness for eating the right foods, I want to offer simple ways to reduce caloric intake and improve wellness.

A very simple way to get more nutritious meals is to substitute rice for pasta or potatoes. Rice bran can help cut cholesterol and lower blood sugar. It is also rich in disease-fighting compounds and fiber. Be sure to chose whole-grain rice. Some options in addition to brown rice are black japonica, red rice, brown basmati which have more fiber and flavor.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Are Linked to Longevity

By beverly  |  Posted in , , , ,   |  January 20th, 2010

New research suggests the fatty acids may possess an even more fundamental benefit: Heart patients with high omega-3 intake had relatively longer "telomeres," which are stretches of DNA whose length correlates with longevity. Read the full article here:

Fad Diets Fade::Apple Cider Vinegar is Historic

By beverly  |  Posted in , ,   |  January 4th, 2010

Apple Cider Vinegar has been used for centuries to lower blood sugar and control appetite. Other diets have come and gone such as the alcohol only diet William the Conqueror created when he became too fat to ride his horse. There have been a plethora of food based diets like skim milk and bananas, meat and fat, cabbage soup, the lemonade diet, and even one that claimed "calories don't count" as long as you drink vegetable oil at the end of each meal.

My Formula for Health and Well Being:: Body Ami and Yoga

By beverly  |  Posted in , ,   |  November 24th, 2009

As we approach Thanksgiving, gyms are filled with athletes working to burn off as many calories as they can before they feast on turkey and accoutrements. But exercise is rarely rote physical movement. Take Yoga. It's exercise. But it also a philosophy, a science and an art.
Many think of yoga as choreographed stretching but that simplification does not do it justice. The practice of postures (asanas) strengthens the body, creating a feeling of well being. But making the shapes of the postures is the physical part.
